The intent of the study is to inform planning processes for the city-region to address environmental and resource challenges. The approach is on understanding the embeddedness of the city systems (man-made/ engineered as well as natural) to the regional determinants and drivers of development.
This will help evolve intervention strategies that address the fundamental issues of natural resources, traditional settlement patterns and associated livelihoods.
This is especially critical in the case of water systems and natural system structure. The study examines existing associations and dependencies between natural systems and informal settlements. The process helps identify and clarify potential positive association as well as risks associated with future developments. Conventional approaches to informal settlements, relocation and resettlement are analyzed and possible alternatives are proposed.
Concerns of multiple stakeholders including state agencies, industry and environmental groups are address in the process to resolve conflicts and create synergies.
The study has been carried out for the GIZ-ICPP under the Area based Proposals for Smart City in association with the municipal authorities of Coimbatore in Tamil Nadu.
